Thomas Guldbrandsen (29) is a passionate and ambitious aid worker who has recently returned home to Oslo with his wife Anne to work for an aid organization. Thomas’ father-in-law Steffen Gunderson sponsors the non-government organization called ProAID. ProAID is a symbol of Nordic utopia; idealistic, organized, and high-tech. Their mission: professionalizing foreign aid development.

On his first assignment in Tanzania, Thomas befriends Seyyid, who reveals the local corruption and the recent tragedy of his village. As Thomas investigates the matter, he stumbles on a web of lies and deceit originating from ProAID.

Stan, a former accountant from the aid organization who was fired for “alcoholism”, shows Thomas the money trail. As the web untangles a young renegade journalist, Gordon, shows him the final evidence and means to expose the corruption.

Thomas discoveries and actions will lead to a chain of events that challenge ‘the Utopia’ and also his relationship to his father-in-law and wife.

What was once volunteer NGO’s (non government-organizations), have now become large multinationals in a trillion dollar industry. NGO’s are often unknown, unregulated, and fighting to get the next big donation.
